Not all Pepper Sprays are the same -there are differences in the "pepper spray" itself.
Here are the meanings behind the mysterious initials, the effects, and preferences. This will inable you to make an informed decision no matter who you purchase pepper spray from. READ ON ...
CS stands for "orthochlorobenzalmalonitrile" (what a mouthful that was!)
CN stands for "alphachtoroacetaphenone"
OC stands for "Oleoresin Capsicum"
OC is the newest of the three types, and by far the most effective. It truly is the only one that should be considered for self defense.
There are combination Pepper Sprays which combine OC with CS or CN. Again, you'll want to make sure that OC is included for the best protection.
CS and CN are irritants - meaning they cause irritation. They also can take longer to wear off, in some cases lasting days.
OC is an inflammatory agent and causes the eyes to clamp shut hard, dilation of the pupils to decrease vision or cause temporary blindness, and uncontrollable cough.
OC works well on animals, but most versions are not made for that purpose. There are special version designed specifically for dogs, bears, etc.
Pepper Sprays are available in 1%, 5%, or 10% concentrations - but don't let this number fool you! It's not necessarily the percentage you want to look closely at - as the Scoville Heat Units (SHU's) are what truly matters. Most OC Pepper Sprays will contain roughly 2 million SHU's (that's a hot doozy)!
Also, a very fine grain pepper spray is much more effective than the coarser grains. The coarser grains may not mix properly in the container and since the grains are heavier, may stay in the container and not be sprayed out. Not a chance you'll want to take when faced with a perpetrator!
Stay safe! Choose a Pepper Spray with very fine grains, and high SHU's containing OC!
